Love & Hip Hop’s Yandy Smith is the epitome of reality gold — love her or hate her, viewers are definitely talking about Yandy.
In a recent interview with NecoleBitchie.com, the controversial former manager of rapper Jim Jones discusses her edit on the show, her real friends and how she got to the top of her profession… that, and a little rumor about her boyfriend’s fight with Jim Jones. Because it’s not reality television if there isn’t fighting — even off-camera — right? An excerpt from that interview is below.
Yandy, you came out the Violator Management camp. Exactly how long have you been in the industry?
I got an internship with Violator in 2004, right out of college at Howard. Then I turned that into a position there.
When and where did you meet Jim Jones?
I met Jim in 2005 on a private jet chartered by Russell Simmons. They were flying us to Detroit for the Hip Hop summit to register young voters and Jim and I sat next to one another. He kept telling me that he managed this group The Diplomats and I told him to hit me up if he needed any help. He started calling me every day and eventually I was like ‘You’re going to have to pay me for this.” So I became his official manager and left Violator in 2005.
On the show you’re definitely portrayed as a woman about her business. Were you always that way? Or was there a situation that brought that out of you?
You know what, when I went to Howard, I got a scholarship the first two years. But my mother made me pay for the last two years. So that really taught me to be about my business. Yeah, being social was great and I did that too but I definitely learned quickly that I had to handle mine. And when school was over, I brought that same mindset to Violator Management. I knew I had to hurry up and find a job so I could pay back my student loans. So I came in on my business.

So on the show you made the statement that at the end of the day, for you it’s about making money…
See that was only part of the statement. What they didn’t show you was that I also said how much I love Jim. See a lot of that is changed in editing or manipulated by producers.
Let’s talk about that. Are you happy with the way you’ve been represented?
(Groans) See, here’s the thing: most people don’t realize how this really works. If the producers contact me and say there’s a woman named Erica Mena interested in meeting with me about management, I don’t know what an Erica Mena is. But I took the meeting and all the sudden its made to look like I’m starting something. Or if Emily [Bustamante] invites me along with the rest of the girls to her party, I don’t know what type of party it is until I get there. And really I didn’t come with Kimbella. The camera just shows us walking up to the house together, so now it looks like I’ve brought Kimbella [Vanderhee] and I didn’t.
So have you been portrayed wrong?
Listen, you can’t edit something that you do. I am who I am on the show with one exception: I really don’t have any drama in my life. I’m not around grown women fighting and all of that. That doesn’t happen in my normal life. A lot of that is manipulated because it makes sense in the storyline.
Would you consider your cast mates friends in real life?
No. I’m friends with Kimbella. She is genuinely my friend. I like Somaya [Reece]. I like Olivia. I knew Olivia from my Violator days. I wasn’t on her day to day team but we got to know each other better after that.
What about Chrissy?
I never had a reason to be close with Chrissy [Lampkin]. Before the show I really only had a relationship with Chrissy through Jim. If we were going somewhere and Jim was like ‘I’m bringing Chrissy’ then I was like cool. But we never hung out or had dinner at each others houses. I have that relationship with Juelz and Kim. I’m the God mother of their child.
So you’ve finished filming and I know you’ve got a big episode coming up and you can’t tell us too much. So let me ask you this, are you at peace with how the situation ended with you and Jim?
I’m at peace. Absolutely. You know what? The show brought a lot of things to light. I’m quick to brother out somebody. I’m super quick to call a dude my brother – and part of that comes from being a woman in this industry. Calling someone my brother lets other people know there’s nothing going on and it sends a message to that dude that there’s a line he shouldn’t cross with me. But Jim? Jim was deeper than my brother. In a lot of ways I think of Jim as my first born. He really was my very first project. We were broke together and then got rich together.
So where is that relationship now?
I will always love Mama Jones. Mama Jones and I used to talk for hours about all sorts of things – not just Jim – so I will always have a relationship with her.
What about Jim?
I’ll just say this: Jim will always be a very important factor in my career history. Like I said, he was there in the beginning, so my appreciation for that will always be there.
[If] they asked you back for Season 3, would you do it?
I don’t know at this point. Honestly. The people that can really affect my bottom line, know what it is. But the other people that see the show and call me the Don King of the show, they think ‘oh Yandy’s messy.’ I don’t know if there’s anywhere else for me to go on the show. And I don’t need my own show. America likes to watch a train wreck. Chrissy could have her own show. But I’m not a train wreck. So I don’t know.
Do you have a boyfriend?
(Laughs) Yes, I have a boo.
Did he beat up Jim Jones?
I don’t know. I wasn’t there. I heard Jim say it was a botched robbery in Harlem.
Did your boyfriend attempt to rob Jim Jones, in Harlem?
No. My boyfriend definitely doesn’t need to rob anyone.
Whoa! According to the rumor mill, Yandy’s boyfriend allegedly beat up Jim Jones a few weeks ago in NYC. Sources close to Jim have, however, insisted it was a botched robbery. That is some pretty hefty stuff if you ask me. Personally, I enjoy some Yandy on the show, but all the ladies bring that certain something (read: DRAMZ!) to each episode.
WHAT DO YOU THINK OF YANDY’S INTERVIEW? DO YOU THINK SHE’S A LEGITIMATE PROFESSIONAL OR THE “DON KING” OF THE SERIES? ANY TRUTH TO THE RUMOR THAT HER BOYFRIEND BEAT UP JIM JONES?
Yandy really was on message on this one. Sounds plausible and that she has a good head on her shoulders. She should definitely not come back. It cannot help her career as I see it.
Yandy just needs to pop Chrissy in her mouth or throat. Mouth so she can stfu. Throat, so she can stfu.

I really like Yandy, and I think she’s way too good for show like this. She probably got into to increase her profile and show how a business woman carries herself, but she’s right when she says, people wanna see a trainwreck, so Chrissy could have her own show…lol. She’s definitely been the most misunderstood and for whatever reason, the other ladies (Chrissy especially) just didn’t warm to her.
Chrissy is big on trying to check everybody else, but she’s the epitome of someone who can dish it out but can’t take it.
Yandy should consider mentoring young ladies instead of renewing her LAHH contract. She is business savy and knows how to separate business from “pettiness”. One classy lady.
Wow! Can’t believe Jim Jones and her boyfriend had a fist2cuffs. I like them all, really. I luvz me some Chrissy but wish she’d ‘simmer down now, simmer down’. I like Somaya and I’m cheerleading for her to make it in the industry – she does need to check her clothing before performing. I like the calm respectful Mama Jones. I wish Emily strength and perspective in her life as she is a role model to her daughter (and son). I like Jim Jones, I think he’s handsome (and that body, wow!) I’m hoping this go well from Olivia. Yandy is funny and quite business savvy. Hope she and Chrissy can make amends – life is too short to be ‘beefing’ over ‘talk’. The only I don’t really care for is Kimbella. Trying to empathize with her because of her upbringing – it was an insight into her life and I hope she gets it together.
A few years ago when I was heavy into Hip Hop Promotions, I would constantly call my male counterparts “brother”. I know exactly what Yandy means when she says you have to use that term to establish what type of relationship you will maintain with the opposite sex. “I love you like a brother and I will have your back always like my brother, but not that your not attractive, but we just can’t exist that way if I am going to get paid off of you.”
Yandy is too good for this show. It’s clear Chrissy is insecure, and can’t stand being with women who are prettier, smarter or more accomplished than her. Yandy is lowering herself even being associated with these broads.
Yandy is a fellow Howard alum so I am going to be in her corner and on top of that why when a woman is about making her paper there is an issue from other? When men do it they just hustling. Chrissy is a miserable low self esteem bitch. Jim is engaged to her he is not going to marry her. She needs to learn to shut the hell up and stay out of peoples business. Maybe if she enrolled in college or got a job she would have other things to do in life than criticize all the ladies for keeping their hustle going.
I support Yandy’s decision to quit managing Jim. At some point, I thought Chrissy was truly sorry for her fight with Kimbella. I was also happy to see that Jim finally proposed. But when she started in with Yandy, I confirmed my dislike for her because it wasn’t necessary. I believe that she didn’t think that Yandy would pull the plug and wanted revenge. What man wants his women out there acting like that, especially when he is trying to garner favor from the public. Not a good look.
Yandy seems like a great friend and she handles her business! I applaude her for her dedication and hard work, especially when she was talking about school and doing something with her life! Chrissy really seems to be a hot mess and is always trying to fight someone! She could take notes from Yandy!!! Even though I enjoy watching her on the show, because of the nonsense and drama, it will be best if she doesn’t return.
Yandy is a hard worker and I respect for that, chrissy on the other hand is a shit starter. Yandy keep doing your thing, chrissy is loud and rude don’t ever stoop to her level
What I love about Yandy is that she conducts herself like a Howard woman who knows how to not only support herself without being lazy and HAVING to lean on a man (like she said about Crissy in the club). Fine, if a man wants his woman to not work, but damn, Chrissy said she seduced Jim SO she wouldn’t have to work – that’s lazy.
Tandy was a “lady” in public, but she retained the ability stoop low like an alley ho to whip Chrissy’s fat ass in public when Chrissy started talking smack. Glad she didn’t back down…want to know how Chrissy justifies not getting in a lick at all wit’ her “bad” self.

I love Yandy. I listen to her mentor speak to her about where she thought Yandy went wrong. I have to agree with her mentor, when she explained what Yandy wrote in her email. I understand that she did it because she was hurt and the relationship with Jim has been that of building and growth. Yandy had gotten too close because she lost perspective when she thought that Jim was going to choose her over his girlfriend. I understand that, it was the loyalty that she confused with doing her job.
Yandy walk away from this format and do something like a poster said with young women conducting business…for yourself. I still love you Yandy!

Why would a true professional in the industry bargain with her reputation by getting in front of the camera? Why would a professional in a managerial role step across the lines and comment on a publicly hostile family situation of a client? Why does Yandy keep stepping into messy situations? Yandy wanted attention and needs to grow up. Everything she has done makes professional women look emotional and limited on their abilities. I really don’t like her because she appears to be interested in camera time and headlining. I know too many sisters who work hard to stand strong and represent – her name couldn’t be spoken in the same conversation as them.
For some reason, even with all the clarification of ” brother ” talk Yandy in my opinion gives off an image of jealous ..

Yandy has been unprofessional every step of the way. Commenting in any way, by statements, dancing(alone although with a group) or giving Chrissy a book, about a conflict between a client’s mother and lover is unacceptable. Her own mentor advised her about how unprofessional the email was and still Yandy can’t admit her mistakes. Also how can you profess to love your”brother” but repeatedly infer that he is a liar with the “lay away ring” comments. Jim asked Chrissy to marry him,period, Why is this an issue for Yandy in any way.

This show.put her on the map where she is a brand has over 100k twittering followers…not sure how it was berfore the show and is branding herself with a jewelry line that seems to be doing well.
That said. She needs to leave the show unless she will be there to manage somaya and/or kimbella. I could see a mentorship show with tvone or bet…even on the own network just not sure if that is a reach or not.

This woman needs to keep everything on a professional level and not interfere in her client’s personal life. You don’t email your client talking about what he is buying for his woman, wife, mother, girlfriend etc. A professional must always remain a professional. Yandy’s only mistake was believing that Jim would take her side and mentioning how Chrissy spent his money(although it was funny). Jim is used to loud, ignorant, overpowering, grasping women (I mean look at his mom) sotrain wrecks don’t bother him. Chrissy is too damn old (42) for how she act. Yandy has a net worth of about 15M, Olivia 4M, Emily 2M, Somaya 400K, Kimbella 800K, Jim Jones 2.5M and you know what Chrissy’s net worth is 50K. Now that is nothing to sneeze at but the point is these women and Jim are bullied by, degraded, ostracized, and pressured by Chrissy and she has the least (barring attitude) of them all. As I read some of these post and see all the names ppl are calling Chrissy and Emily I can see how so many ppl don’t seem to be able to get the valid points trying to be made. All of the aggression in these post def leads me to believe that alot of you should be more understanding of Chrissy’s wrath. I can hear the anger and venom in your words. First of all Em seems to be coming into her own. She did what a true friend does, and to Yandy’s face told her as did Yandy’s mentor that she was wrong. They need to take Chrissy off the show with her puppet sidekicks. Chrissy is so disrespectfully to others, I have no respect for her. All shes doing is keeping drama, she have nothing going for herself, that I can see. She think peoples owe her something, if you go into her past, I bet she will shut up. The only person that i dont like is Ericka. Why? She is a hater. Her and Kimbella do have similiar backgrounds. They both model and do videos. The fact that Ericka cant keep it real that they do have this in common proves she dont keep it real. She has a baby by a rapper from Terror Squad, so again, how are you on a different level than Kim? Well, Kim does have a Masters degree……. Sounds like a little bit of hate is going on.
