The Challenge Alum Nelson Thomas Arrested for DWI, Despite Near-Fatal Car Crash Earlier This Year

Need another example of why you should never drive drunk? Well, let’s take a look at The Challenge star Nelson Thomas. Earlier this year, he was involved in a nearly fatal car accident.

Six months later, Nelson is still recovering from injuries. He was also just arrested for driving while intoxicated, according to Page Six. It only took half a year.

Busted by the toxicology report

In March 2023, Nelson was driving drunk in Austin, Texas, when he lost control of his shiny Audi A4 and slammed it right into a bridge. Not only did he total his car, but it also burst into flames with him trapped inside. Passerbys rescued him, and he admitted to having “2-3” cocktails. Those two or three cocktails must have been ginormous because the officers who responded to the scene said he reeked of booze and had the classic, glossed-over eyes.

Nelson failed a field sobriety test, so the cops arrested him while he was still in the hospital. However, they released him from their custody when they realized that it was going to take a long time for him to recover from his injuries. At that point, Nelson probably thought he was off the hook for his drunken crime. But, the officers weren’t done with their investigation.

According to reports, the cops obtained a search warrant from the hospital so they could get the details on just how much Nelson had been drinking that night. After reviewing the toxicology results, they learned that Nelson was more than twice the legal limit with a blood alcohol content of 0.178 percent. That’s probably a little more than just two to three drinks.

Thanks to the toxicology report, Nelson was arrested again and charged with a misdemeanor DWI. He paid a $5,000 bond and has a court date scheduled for November 16th. In the meantime, he’s been documenting his ongoing recovery process on Instagram.
