Alan Cumming Shuts Down Traitors Conspiracy Theories: ‘Months of Preparation’

Season 2 of The Traitors has been epic so far. The cast, the banishments, and the explosive roundtable discussions where Phaedra Parks flawlessly executes one of her own have all been so perfect that we can’t help but talk about it.

The last episode saw one of the series’ titular Traitors, Parvati Shallow, make her exit, after being discovered by Peter Weber and his crew of Faithful followers. However, fans believe she might’ve still been in the game if it hadn’t been for the torch-lighting ceremony in the episode before

In case you missed it, Survivor alum Sandra Diaz-Twine developed a solid plan that would’ve sent Peter packing. But when host Alan Cumming introduced a twist offering safety to seven players, Peter was one of the lucky ones. Immediately, fans took to social media, accusing the production company of sabotaging the game to save The Bachelor’s sweetheart. Executive producer Sam Rees-Jones shot those rumors down recently, and now Alan is addressing them himself.

In a recent interview with The Playlist, the entertaining host of streaming’s most-watched unscripted series chatted about the logistics of filming a show such as The Traitors. He also divulged whether the torch-lighting ceremony was always part of the plan.

“Always. Look, when people say like, ‘Oh, did they bring Kate [Chastain] back in just because they didn’t have enough…’ I can’t remember if there was a reason or one of the Traitors went,” he began. “These things take months of preparation. And so, these things were all planned. And then, actually, you saw me saying at the beginning [say], ‘There’s 21 of you for now.’”

Alan continued, sharing that filming a single season of The Traitors is more complex than some of his biggest blockbuster films.

“I think the thing that surprised me most is it’s such a huge operation. I mean, it’s massive,” he said. “In one of the stables, there’s a control room that’s like NASA. It looks like NASA, and they’re like doing a moon landing. Seriously. It’s insane. And there’s so many hidden cameras everywhere. So, it’s just a huge, lumbering operation.

“Obviously, the things that change are little, interpersonal things. And, of course, people dying or being murdered, and the group turning on people. But in terms of the changes they made at the beginning of the season, I was kind of expecting them. So, I was just really excited to find out what they may be.”

New episodes of The Traitors begin streaming on Peacock on Thursdays at 9/8c.
