Below Deck Alum Ben Willoughby Dials Back Captain Kerry Criticism

Ever since Below Deck Season 11 aired, Captain Kerry Titheradge and deckhand Ben Willoughby have been on bad terms with each other.

“That was over two years ago, and I haven’t worked with Captain Kerry since,” Ben said. “I’ve moved on to new chapters, and I truly hope he’s doing well. I wish him nothing but the best.”

It all started when Captain Kerry heard the comments Ben made about him, both during and after filming the show. “I guess he thought he was the star.” Kerry said. “He was trying to drag me down … It was very disappointing.”

“I don’t quite get it because [his now-ex] Sunny [Marquis] worked for me,” Kerry told Us Weekly. “I had my own company in Florida, and Sunny came to work for me after the season. And Ben was asking … to come work for me [as well].”

“I believe in second chances for everybody,” the captain continued. “He was trying to get work. I was encouraging him … Then he didn’t like something I said in an interview, which was factual.”

Unfortunately, Ben’s shady on-camera comments about his captain may have sabotaged his career in yachting. “It really affected his employment opportunities,” Kerry explained. “He acted out against a captain … Regardless of a TV show or not, you act out against a captain … other captains are … not going to trust you.”

“It’s very disappointing,” Kerry concluded. “He’s very good at his job, but his ego got in the way.”

Even though Kerry promoted Ben to bosun, Ben talked smack behind his back. “Captain Kerry [has] very much of a military stance,” he said in March 2024. “[It is] more authority-based … It doesn’t really work with the style [of leadership] that I like … So we did have a little bit of friction there, and you might see a little bit of that coming up.”

While watching Season 11, the captain was shocked at Ben’s comments about him. “I would’ve fired him on ego [alone],” Kerry claimed. “He made the decision to act how he did after the fact, which is on him.”

Below Deck airs Mondays at 8/7c on Bravo in the US and on Hayu in the UK and Ireland.
