Why Selling The OC’s Alex Hall Is Getting Backlash for Charlie Kirk MLK Post

Selling The OC star Alex Hall is getting backlash for comparing Charlie Kirk to Martin Luther King Jr. In the wake of Charlie Kirk’s shocking murder, a lot of reality stars are chiming in with their reactions. But Alex Hall’s Instagram post really rubbed people the wrong way. Alex isn’t a stranger to that, as her actions on Selling The OC can be controversial. For instance, she made waves for her flirtations with Tyler Stanaland when he was still married.

However, this is a very serious and sensitive topic. And the Netflix star is getting a whole new level of backlash for her response to it.

Alex Hall shared a reel of Charlie Kirk to her Instagram stories. She wrote, “I’m just going to say it … I feel like this man is the MLK of our generation.” She continued, “and that’s something that saddens me. History repeating its self is something that is 100% preventable, and I blame us. US as humans, US as individuals who allow ourselves to be influenced by society and whatever it may be that drive people to this depth of evil and feeling as though it is right. There is an undoubtedly amount of us who lack to have faith and surrender to fear.” To conclude her thoughts, she wrote, “Let this be your very tragic reminder that Violence is NEVER THE ANSWER.”

Alex’s post quickly went viral on the Selling Sunset Reddit. Multiple users said this would convince them to stop watching the show.

Social media users also took to Alex’s Instagram posts to comment on her controversial MLK comparison. One Instagram user wrote that they liked Alex on Selling The OC, but “if someone who spread hate is inspirational to you I find that sad.” Another said, “All the racist micro aggressions on Selling OC makes so much sense now. So glad you people are really showing your true colours.” One person wrote that Charlie Kirk “was literally against everything Martin Luther King stood for.” Finally, someone wrote that they hoped Alex said this out of ignorance and would apologize.

It’s one thing to express shock, sadness, and horror at Charlie Kirk’s murder. Or to send condolences to his wife and children. And it’s very fair to respond to his murder by saying that violence is never the answer. However, comparing Charlie Kirk to Martin Luther King Jr. is a strange choice for multiple reasons.

To start, Charlie Kirk himself was extremely critical of MLK Jr. He called the civil rights leader an “awful” and “not a good person.” He was also critical of the Civil Rights Act. That alone makes this a very odd comparison. As a user on the Selling Sunset Reddit wrote, “The guy who said that passing the Civil Rights Act was a ‘mistake’ is somehow our time’s MLK Jr?”

Throughout his life, Charlie Kirk was controversial for his racist statements. In 2024, Charlie said, “If I see a Black pilot, I’m going to be like, ‘Boy, I hope he’s qualified.'” In a clip that went viral, Charlie said of Joy Reid, Michelle Obama, Sheila Jackson Lee, and Ketanji Brown Jackson, “you do not have brain processing power to be taken seriously. You have to go steal a white person’s slot.”

Martin Luther King Jr. fought for civil rights and for freedoms. Throughout his life, Charlie Kirk also claimed he fought for freedoms. But some of the freedoms he claimed to fight for were his right to make such bigoted statements. To call him the MLK of this generation is just wrong.

Alex Hall deleted the story, but has yet to respond to the backlash. As of this writing, she hasn’t posted another Instagram story since.

Selling the OC is available to stream on Netflix.
