When we first met Mary Cosby on Real Housewives of Salt Lake City Season 1, she revealed that her husband was actually her step-grandfather. As eyes widened, Mary explained that this man was once her grandmother’s second spouse. Before passing, her grandmother asked Mary to take over their church. But marrying him was the only way. It was weird, Mary admitted, and in Season 6, Mary is shedding even more light on this interesting storyline.
During the reunion for RHOSLC Season 5, Mary noted that the renovations on her church were complete. As the First Lady of Faith Temple Pentecostal Church, Mary is now preparing to reopen this house of worship in Season 6. And with that, she is shedding an even brighter light on her marriage to the Bishop, Robert Cosby Sr.
Mary Cosby said her marriage to Robert Sr “odd” for both of them

Mary toured the renovated facility with her cousin, otherwise known as her contractor, Big Joe, during Season 6 Episode 4. She felt “excited” to return to this congregation, mainly because “some prayer” might “help” her son, Robert Cosby Jr., navigate his life following his stint in rehab. After all, prayer once helped her.
Long ago, her late grandmother, Rosemary “Mama” Cosby, prayed for Mary. “When I was younger, I remember Mama called me, and she was like, ‘Mary, I think it’s time for you to come back and be saved and get in church.’ And I was like, ‘OK.’ And because of her, I am everything I am,” Mary explained.
But before Mary could take over the church, she needed to marry Robert Sr., the bishop, following her grandmother’s death in 1997. Yes. This scenario was weird. But Mary still respected her Mama’s wishes, as did Robert Sr., her now-husband.
“That was odd to both of us,” Mary admitted in Episode 4. “Marry me? He obeyed what Mama wanted. He wasn’t trying to do anything extra.”
But her own mother interfered. “My grandmother told [my mom], so we were all clear [about] what my grandmother wanted. But once my grandmother passed, my mom just started trying to take over everything. And things got bad.”
The two were still estranged when her mother died. Crying, Mary stated that her mother had “put lies out there” in the press about her and Robert. Sr. “And when she left the earth a few months ago, it almost felt like it was actually official, because it became a whole bigger, real, hurtful reality,” which Robert Sr. helped her process.
Real Housewives of Salt Lake City airs Tuesdays at 8/7c on Bravo.
