Dancing with the Stars judge Derek Hough is loving life right now. His professional career is thriving. He is the new host of Extra, and recently appeared on a celebrity edition of Wheel of Fortune. And because of Derek’s enthusiasm, host Ryan Seacrest had to create a new rule.
And it isn’t only Derek’s career that is bringing him fulfillment these days. Derek and his wife, dancer Hayley Erbert, announced that they are expecting their rainbow baby. So, while the couple knows the sex of their bundle of joy, they are keeping that to themselves. And Derek is thrilled about being a dad.
Derek Hough wanted to spin on the Wheel of Fortune wheel
Three DWTS personalities competed to raise money for charity. Derek’s fellow judge, Bruno Tonioli, and pro dancer Jenna Johnson joined him at the iconic wheel. And the night went off the rails in the best possible way.
“Knowing someone, or being friends, is definitely helpful,” Ryan told USA Today. “You can kind of tease them more than somebody you don’t know.” Of course, Ryan famously dated Derek’s sister, Julianne Hough, who now co-hosts DWTS.
During the show, Derek demonstrated his excitement by jumping on the podium. However, permission to board the actual wheel was denied. “In the commercial break, (Hough) was jumping on the center of the wheel and having Bruno spin it,” Ryan explained, “much like the top of a cake ornament. We did say, ‘Please don’t do that. That would break it, and there’s only one of those wheels. If that breaks, we have a real problem.'”
Ryan added, “We had to sort of say, ‘Stick to the ledge.'” However, Ryan did enjoy his time with the DWTS cast. “They’re very physical, and that makes for fun,” he stated.
Dancing with the Stars airs on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. on ABC and Disney+. It will stream on Hulu the next day.
