When Tom Bergeron, who hosted Dancing with the Stars from its debut in 2005, departed in 2020, fans were stunned. Model and host Tyra Banks smized in his place, until Mirrorball champ Alfonso Ribeiro took over. Once DWTS pro and judge Julianne Hough joined the roster as co-host, the show seemed to be on an even keel again.
Still, longtime DWTS fans missed Tom’s humor and charm. Plus, they were livid when Tom was fired after Season 28 concluded. Despite all of this, Tom was thrilled when his buddy Alfonso was brought on board, and he celebrated this change in the ballroom.
Why did Tom Bergeron leave DWTS?
Tom shared the news via Twitter after his dismissal. The page has been removed. “Just informed @DancingABC will be continuing without me. It’s been an incredible 15-year run and the most unexpected gift of my career,” Tom wrote. “I’m grateful for that and for the lifelong friendships made. That said, now what am I supposed to do with all of these glitter masks?”
Plus, Tom shared his feelings about his exit. “In all candor, the show that I left was not the show that I loved. It was kind of obvious that we were kind of butting heads [behind-the-scenes],” Tom previously stated. “It wasn’t a pleasant [experience].” Meanwhile, executive producer Andrew Llinares, whom Tom reportedly had issues with, left DWTS in 2022.
Tom Bergeron will return to Dancing with the Stars
When Good Morning America announced Tom’s return to celebrate DWTS’ 20th birthday, it was welcome news. Of course, Tom hinted about a possible return during Season 34, and fans had their fingers crossed.
Now, Tom will be a guest judge for Season 34, Episode 9 of DWTS. When asked how he felt about his return, Tom responded, “It feels really good. I’m really looking forward to it.” He credited the current ream with bringing the long-running series “back to its essence.”
Dancing with the Stars airs on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. on ABC and Disney+. It will stream on Hulu the next day.
