Star of TV and film, Sally Kirkland, passed away this morning, according to her representative, Michael Greene. She had experienced failed health, including dementia and a number of falls, recently. Sally has been in hospice care in Palm Springs this past year.
Since SAG-AFTRA cancelled supplement insurance for members over 65 years in 2021, a GoFundMe page was set up for Sally. It revealed she had several fractures, including in her neck, wrist and hip. She also had “life-threatening infections” recently.

Sally was born on Halloween in 1941, and named after her mother, an editor for Vogue and LIFE magazines. She modeled and went to acting school, graduating from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.
She is known for iconic films, including 1968’s Blue; 1973’s The Way We Were and The Sting; 1976’s A Star Is Born; and 1980’s Private Benjamin. Sally received an Academy Award nomination and won her first Golden Globe for Anna. Her TV appearances include Hawaii Five-O, Kojak, Three’s Company, The Incredible Hulk and Charlie’s Angels.
Sally also was an acting teacher for notable celebrities, including Sandra Bullock, Barbra Streisand and Liza Minelli. “My point is that, over the years, I’ve taught five thousand people acting and lately I have a lot of energy on these kids, having the same break I had as a high school girl,” she said.
More recently, Sally was featured in movies such as JFK in 1991, Bruce Almighty in 2003, The Agency in 2010, Extinction in 2017 and 80 for Brady in 2023. She was the subject of Sallywood, a 2024 comedy based on her relationship with director Xaque Gruber. The film was released on Prime Video November 10.
“When I was growing up watching Marilyn Monroe, I learned that you can be very beautiful, very glamorous and very vulnerable and not give up your soul just because you were a movie star,” she once said. Sally was 84 years old.
