RHOP Alum Mia Thornton Sued Over Alleged Unpaid Rent Before Arrest

Mia Thornton joined The Real Housewives of Potomac in Season 6 and stayed through Season 9, long enough for viewers to witness the gradual unraveling of her marriage to Gordon Thornton and the endlessly messy nature of her relationships with the other ladies.

Though she moved from Potomac to Atlanta this past spring, the drama seemed to follow her. Over the last few months, things have only become more chaotic in her life. On November 19, police arrested her at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport after a warrant accused her of taking furniture from a luxury rental unit.

It’s now come to light that her arrest landed just as court filings surfaced showing she’d been caught up in eviction disputes and unpaid rent claims in more than one state. The first round of filings pointed to one issue in particular: unpaid rent that had already triggered legal action.

Us Weekly reported that Encore Management sued Mia and a co-tenant, Jared McGriff, on September 11 over unpaid rent. The company said they rented a three-bedroom Atlanta unit but failed to pay what they owed.

Encore claimed they were behind $5,100 for September and $6,085 for every month afterward, along with $700 in fees. Us also reviewed a second eviction filing from March 2024 in North Carolina. In that case, a landlord said Mia missed $3,419 in rent and asked the court for possession of the property.

The situation escalated sharply when officers arrested Mia on November 19. Customs and Border Protection contacted police after identifying an active warrant tied to alleged furniture theft.

According to the police report, a rep for Encore said Mia and Jared moved out overnight on October 28 “without notifying anyone.” The rep claimed they took every piece of furniture that came with the unit “prior to their move in, as well as the TV which was on the wall.” The landlord said the items belonged to their client and were never allowed to leave the apartment. Officers reviewed invoices showing the furniture and TV were worth more than $11,000.

Mia became the latest Housewife with a mugshot when police took her into custody without incident and booked her into the Fulton County Jail. Bodycam footage showed her crying as officers handcuffed her. She told police that Jared had a storage key. “I just want him to put that furniture back; enough is enough,” she said. She also added, “It’s ridiculous.”

The documents didn’t specify the relationship between Mia and Jared. The mom of three was recently linked to R&B artist Bobby V.

Mia has not posted bond and remains behind bars.

Season 10 of The Real Housewives of Potomac airs Sundays at 8/7c on Bravo. Past seasons stream on Peacock and Hayu.
