Afrika Bambaataa, widely regarded as a key figure in the establishment of modern hip-hop culture, has reportedly died at the age of 67 after a battle with cancer.

Born Lance Taylor, the DJ and producer helped shape the genre’s early sound and global influence through his group, Universal Zulu Nation. The group confirmed his death in a Facebook post.

“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Afrika Bambaataa, a pioneering architect and global ambassador of Hip Hop culture,” the group wrote on Facebook, “Revered as the Godfather of Hip Hop, Bambaataa was instrumental in organizing, shaping, and elevating the culture from its earliest days in the Bronx into a worldwide movement rooted in the principles of Peace, Unity, Love, and Having Fun.”

“Through his vision, leadership, and unwavering commitment, he helped transform Hip Hop into a powerful force for expression, community building, and social change,” the statement continued, adding that his legacy “is permanently embedded in the foundation of Hip Hop history.”

Growing up in the Bronx, Bambaataa gained recognition by hosting parties that helped define early hip-hop culture. His work with Universal Zulu Nation also played a significant role in spreading hip-hop globally.

The Hip Hop Alliance also shared a statement on Instagram, honoring the artist while noting that his legacy was “complex.” This referred to allegations of sexual assault made against Bambaataa. Multiple individuals accused him of assault when they were minors. He stepped down from his leadership role in the Universal Zulu Nation in 2016 after the allegations surfaced.

Bambaataa remains a significant figure in the history of hip-hop.
