A comedian doesn’t appreciate how the Republicans are running with transgender issues. Dave Chappelle is calling out those politicians, believing they are “doing a weaponized version” of his jokes on that subject.
In 2021, the comedian got his share of hate for his Netflix stand-up special, The Closer. His act featured him telling some transgender jokes. Many in the transphobic community took issue with that special. Dave said his act wasn’t for everyone. He believes Republicans are using that to their advantage, which he takes issue with.
The comedian isn’t happy with the Republican Party
Dave Chappelle likely won’t be shifting political allegiances anytime soon. The Democratic supporter has a lot of problems with Republicans and what they’ve done since his infamous 2021 stand-up routine. Dave laid into the GOP in a recent interview with NPR.
He recalled a visit to Capitol Hill, where both Republican and Democratic representatives were hounding him for photos. He didn’t want to say no, so rather than picking sides, he took pictures with everyone. One of them was Republican Lauren Boebert, who posted the pic on X with the caption “Just three people who understand that there’s only two genders.” Republican Paulina Luna was also in the photo. Dave says that she “instantly, like, weaponized or politicized” his transgender jokes.
According to Dave, the media “rage-baited” his transgender jokes, though he believes the GOP took it to another level. The comedian isn’t the first to get blasted over questionable remarks. In September 2021, Bethenny Frankel was accused by fans of making transphobic statements. She said she’s “not afraid” to be cancelled despite those allegations.
The infamous comedy act by Dave years ago lasted over 20 minutes and featured several transgender jokes. Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos defended that comedy special, calling it a freedom of artistic expression.
