A newly unveiled statue of Queen Elizabeth II has stirred widespread backlash. Meant to honor the monarch’s 70-year reign, fans are disappointed that the statue failed to capture her beauty and likeness. Critics are going so far as to call the new tribute “boring.”
Monarchy fans have claimed the statue is “boring”
Unveiled on April 21 in honor of the late queen’s 100th birthday, the design shows Elizabeth wearing her Garter robes. The original concept had been to portray Her Majesty on horseback, highlighting her lifelong love of horses.
Certainly, the change from the original proposal upset many social media users, and they didn’t hesitate to express their dismay. “It’s awful!! It looks nothing like her!” commented one royal fan. “Being on horseback would have been magnificent! … The new design is boring and ugly.”
“Absolutely horrendous,” wrote another disappointed fan. “It looks nothing like our beloved Queen Elizabeth at all. Can we get the one the same as Canada? That is fabulous and very lifelike. This is totally hideous.”
“The late Queen Elizabeth deserves a fitting monument, not some poorly executed statue,” wrote another. “It doesn’t even look like her! What happened to the magnificent one with the late Queen mounted on horseback? Penny pinching. Who made the decision? Someone who doesn’t like the monarchy.”
But it’s not just fans of the monarchy who are disappointed. Stephen Bayley, the chairman of the Royal Fine Art Commission Trust, also called for a rethink. “The Queen on horseback was what was originally proposed and what we all thought we were going to get,” he commented.
Furthermore, the chairman added that portraying the queen on horseback would have better captured the sense of grandeur and leadership she represented.
Meanwhile, her son King Charles has praised the new design, calling it “fantastic,” after viewing a scale model.
