Donald Trump is facing renewed scrutiny over surging gas prices on the internet as his old tweet from 2012 circulates on social media. The resurfaced post was recently shared on X, sparking strong reactions from netizens.
Donald Trump’s 2012 tweet about gas prices resurfaces
As Donald Trump continues to face growing pressure to bring gas prices under control in light of the Iran war, an old tweet from the president is gaining traction online. Netizens have dug up Trump’s tweet from 2012, where he criticized the then-President Barack Obama for not controlling surging prices.
Journalist and commentator Alex Cole shared the president’s old tweet, writing, “There is literally always a tweet.” At the time, Trump wrote, “Why isn’t Obama protecting us from ridiculous gas prices?” In another post from 2012, Trump stated, “Gas prices are at crazy levels – fire Obama!”
Netizens are now referring to the old posts to criticize Trump for the current surge in gas prices. One X user commented, “Why isn’t Trump protecting us from ridiculous gas prices??” while another said, “Hilarious.”
The post resurfaces just days after the American Automobile Association’s (AAA) brief report on Thursday, where it reported, “The national average is $1.12 higher than it was this time last year, as oil prices surge above $100/barrel with no indication of when the Strait of Hormuz will reopen.” The statement further said, “Gas prices are the highest they’ve been in four years, since late July 2022.”
When asked about the increase in prices, Donald Trump stated, “And you know what? And we’re not going to have a nuclear weapon in the hands of Iran.” He then reassured, “The gas will go down. As soon as the war is over, it’ll drop like a rock.”
On Thursday, the president described ongoing US operations as not a war. “I don’t call it a war,” the 79-year-old said, adding, “I’d rather have a military operation. Iran is dying to make a deal.”
