Lauren Sanchez attended the annual gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in a plunging navy-blue Schiaparelli dress that left many unimpressed. The philanthropist and her husband, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, are the lead sponsors of the 2026 Met Gala. They also serve as honorary chairs. Bezos did not attend the gala with his wife.
Lauren Sanchez’s fitted Schiaparelli dress with plunging neckline fails to impress at Met Gala
Lauren Sanchez was wearing a custom Schiaparelli gown by Daniel Roseberry. Crafted from deep midnight-blue satin, it featured a structured, strapless bodice with a dramatic sweetheart neckline. The silhouette was a sleek mermaid cut that hugged her body before pooling into a subtle train on the floor. The most striking detail of her look was the off-the-shoulder bejeweled shoulder strap.
According to Vogue, the design referenced a famous portrait in the Met’s collection: John Singer Sargent’s controversial Madame X. The 1833 painting caused a massive uproar because it depicted French socialite Madame Pierre Gautreau in a black fitted gown with one strap slipping off her shoulder. Sanchez told Vogue that she was drawn to this story and “particularly how a small detail, like the fallen jeweled strap, once sparked such a strong public reaction.”
The 56-year-old accessorised with Lorraine Schwartz jewelry. She was wearing a pair of 60-carat pear-shaped diamond-and-pearl drop earrings that complemented the dress’s straps. Further, she also sported a 35-carat Marquise Golconda diamond ring. She wore her hair in loose waves with a side part. Meanwhile, her makeup was soft and simple, courtesy of makeup artist Maria Vargas.
Despite the reference to a famous portrait, the custom Schiaparelli design failed to impress netizens. X user @datb0oi commented, “Looks like some high schooler’s prom dress?” Meanwhile, @TheMcMeanie remarked, “She couldn’t be more boring if she tried, my god. All that money for a dress that looks off the rack.” Another user, @vanillachaidoll, wrote, “Looking boring in Schiaparelli is a feat lmao.”
