Zach Galifianakis Slams Comedians Who ‘Suck up To’ Donald Trump on Podcasts

Zach Galifianakis isn’t holding back when it comes to how comedians handle powerful guests. During a recent podcast chat, he called out what he sees as a growing problem in comedy, especially when figures like Donald Trump appear on shows. For Galifianakis, comedians should challenge authority, not play along.

Speaking on Conan O’Brien Needs A Friend with Conan O’Brien, Galifianakis took aim at fellow comedians who have hosted Trump but avoided tough questions. He didn’t mince words, saying, “They don’t do their court jester… they suck up to him,” arguing that this approach misses the whole point of comedy.

He doubled down on that idea, stressing that comedians have a responsibility to push boundaries. “That’s not the job of a comedian… ” You are to challenge,” he said, adding that simply laughing along or avoiding discomfort isn’t part of the craft. In his view, comedy should question power, not make it comfortable.

To explain his stance, Galifianakis pointed to his own work. He recalled interviewing Hillary Clinton on Between Two Ferns in 2016. At one point, he nearly walked away when he was told to avoid certain topics. “We don’t have to do the interview,” he remembered saying, showing he wasn’t willing to compromise the tone of his show.

Host Conan O’Brien backed him up, praising Galifianakis’ earlier interview with Barack Obama as a perfect example of comedy done right. He called it “hilarious” and noted how Obama leaned into the humor instead of resisting it.

“He sat there and entered your world of being intentionally ignorant about who he is, what he does, cutting him off, and being insanely rude and gave it back to you in equal measure,” O’Brien said. Galifianakis, however, said that same dynamic “wouldn’t work” with Trump, suggesting the former president wouldn’t play along in the same way.
