German Minister Blames Donald Trump’s ‘Irresponsible War’ for Economic Slowdown

German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil accused Donald Trump over his Iran war, claiming it has ultimately impacted the country’s economy. He stressed how the conflict has led to a decrease in expected tax revenues and also affected energy markets across the globe. This is not the first time German officials have spoken out against Trump’s war with Iran. For instance, previous remarks from the German chancellor regarding the conflict have reportedly led the US president to warn Germany about withdrawing US troops from the country.

Lars Klingbeil blames Donald Trump’s war for economic slowdown

Lars Klingbeil placed the blame on Donald Trump for causing an economic slowdown in Germany due to the US-Israel war with Iran. He revealed that the tax revenues were cut short by around $82 billion for 2026-2030. These unexpected cuts, he believes, showcase “just how much the war in Iran is harming our economy.” Moreover, he also pointed out how this conflict has led to a “global energy shock” (via BBC).

Last month, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz appeared to take aim at Trump as he spoke about Iran’s handling of negotiations and how it has kept the US on its toes. Speaking to students in the German town of Marsberg, he said Iran was “obviously negotiating very skillfully” and believed the country was in a much stronger position. He further stated that it was evident because the Iranian leadership had “humiliated” an entire nation.

Further reflecting on how the conflict situation hasn’t been good for Germany, Merz explained, “It is, at the moment, a pretty tangled situation. And it is costing us a great deal of money. This conflict, this war against Iran, has a direct impact on our economic output” (via Al Jazeera).

Following these remarks, Trump said that he would cut down 5000 troops or more from Germany. Meanwhile, NATO spokeswoman Allison Hart claimed that they are working with the US to seek clarification on what has led to this decision from the president.
