US President Donald Trump ignored a plea from First Lady Melania Trump to avoid foul language during a White House address on Monday evening, proceeding moments later to describe the age-old mansion as a “s**t house.”
Donald Trump uses foul language despite his wife’s warning
Speaking at a Rose Garden dinner for law enforcement during Police Week, the president told the assembled guests that his wife had given a specific instruction before his speech. “I was told by my wife, ‘You have to act presidential, so don’t use foul language.’ I won’t, therefore,” he said. Trump then immediately violated the request. “Normally, I would have said it was a s**t House,” he stated. “But I don’t want to say that.”
This was part of his criticism of the White House’s condition before his renovations began. He described structural problems that he claims plagued the building, telling the audience that columns were deteriorating and plaster was detaching from walls. He also mocked the state of the paintwork, recalling how guests would ask, “Couldn’t you fix up the paint job up there?”
The president dedicated significant time to cataloguing his restoration efforts. He pointed to newly installed stonework and repaired walls, claiming he personally funded the materials. “This place is tippy-top now, including all of the brand new beautiful stone, I paid for it myself, all of the stone, all of the different things we have,” Trump said. “Look at them now, they’re perfect. The plaster was falling off; it was terrible. It’s the White House, it’s gotta look incredible. It’s gotta be pristine.”
Donald Trump then promoted his largest ongoing project, the $400 million ballroom under construction behind the White House. He described it as potentially “the most beautiful ballroom anywhere in the world” and spoke of its security features, referencing thick glass panels. The project required demolishing the East Wing, and costs have climbed from an initial $200 million.
