Donald Trump Prioritizes Iran Nuclear Program Over Americans’ ‘Financial Situation’

President Donald Trump made a striking admission about his priorities during ongoing Iran negotiations. The president addressed reporters about the extent to which everyday Americans’ economic struggles factor into his diplomatic approach.

Donald Trump isn’t thinking about Americans’ financial situation

President Donald Trump told reporters on Tuesday that Americans’ financial concerns play no role in his Iran negotiations. Speaking on the White House South Lawn before departing for China, Trump addressed questions about economic motivations. NBC News reported his remarks as he prepared for the diplomatic trip.

“Not even a little bit,” Trump replied when asked how much Americans’ finances motivated him. He stated the “only thing” that matters is preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. Trump added he does not think about “Americans’ financial situation” or “anybody” during these talks.

A reporter pressed Trump on whether he truly ignored the war’s economic impact. Trump responded that preventing a nuclear Iran outweighs everything, including stock market fluctuations. He claimed “every American understands” this priority.

The economic toll of the conflict has meanwhile grown significantly for American households. Since U.S. and Israeli joint strikes began in late February, Iran has blocked the Strait of Hormuz. Roughly 20% of the world’s daily oil supply typically transits through that waterway.

Gas prices have surged as a result, with regular unleaded reaching $4.50 per gallon on Tuesday. Diesel fuel stood at $5.64 per gallon, according to AAA. April inflation climbed to 3.8%, its highest level in nearly three years. The Bureau of Labor Statistics attributed over 40% of the monthly price increase to rising energy costs. Job growth did outpace expectations last month, and U.S. stock indexes have hit record highs during the conflict.

However, public sentiment tells a different story about economic conditions under Trump. A CNN/SSRS survey found 70% of Americans disapproved of Trump’s handling of the economy. That figure represents the highest disapproval the pollster has recorded across both Trump terms. An NBC News poll similarly found two-thirds of respondents disapproved of his handling of inflation. Democrats seized on the remarks, with Michigan Democratic spokesperson Leah Leszczynski comparing Trump’s comments to “let them eat cake.”
