Donald Trump addressed one of the most pressing geopolitical questions ahead of his highly anticipated trip to China. The President made striking remarks about the ongoing Iran war and Beijing’s role in the conflict while departing the White House on Tuesday.
Donald Trump says he doesn’t need President Xi’s help
U.S. President Donald Trump said on May 12 that he plans to discuss Iran with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Reuters reported. However, he dismissed the need for Beijing’s assistance in resolving the ongoing conflict. “I don’t think we need any help with Iran. We’ll win it one way or the other, peacefully or otherwise,” Trump told reporters while departing the White House.
The two leaders will hold their first face-to-face meeting in over six months. Both nations seek to stabilise ties strained by trade disputes and the Iran war. The summit will also address other areas of bilateral disagreement between the world’s two largest economies.
Trump departed for China amid an unresolved war in Iran, with diplomatic negotiations currently at an impasse. Beijing maintains strong ties with Tehran and remains a major consumer of Iranian oil exports. Washington has previously pressed China to use its influence to push Iran toward a deal.
The conflict began when the U.S. and Israel launched strikes on Iran in late February. Trump has since leaned on Beijing to pressure Tehran into ending the war. Despite these efforts, negotiations between Washington and Tehran have failed to produce a resolution.
Trump is scheduled to arrive in Beijing on Wednesday for talks taking place on Thursday and Friday. The visit marks his first trip to China since 2017. He later downplayed Iran as a key topic for the summit. “We have a lot of things to discuss. I wouldn’t say Iran is one of them, to be honest with you, because we have Iran very much under control,” Trump told reporters separately. The upcoming talks will cover trade alongside broader geopolitical tensions between the two nations.
