Vice President JD Vance has come under fire after the former Ohio Senator made a somewhat bleak attempt to defend Donald Trump’s comments regarding the citizens’ financial situation amid the ongoing Iran war. CNN put Vance front and center in a recent feature, effectively calling out the government official for seemingly trying to add unnecessary context to an otherwise simple statement from the President.
CNN challenges JD Vance with Donald Trump’s remark
The US Vice President has landed himself in a messy situation after a CNN clip went viral of him defending the POTUS after the latter downplayed the American people’s financial issues.
The backlash comes after Donald Trump’s May 12 interaction with a bunch of reporters as he departed the White House. During the interview, he addressed whether America’s financial situation impacts the Iran deal.
Trump bluntly replied, “I don’t think about Americans’ financial situation; I don’t think about anybody. I think about one thing: we cannot let Iran have a nuclear weapon. That’s all. That’s the only thing that motivates me.”
At a recent press event, NBC News White House Correspondent Monica Alba cornered JD Vance regarding the same, asking him if he agreed with the President’s stance on Americans’ financial situations.
In response, the Republican politician noted, “Well, I don’t think the President said that. I think that’s a misrepresentation of what the President said, but look, I agree with the President that Iran should not have a nuclear weapon.” He added, “The fundamental goal here is the President wants to make the world safe, but particularly the American people safe from Iran having a nuclear weapon.”
Consequently, a CNN clip of JD Vance defending Trump’s statements went viral. This led to netizens severely criticizing his comments and accusing him of “gaslighting” them.
“Vance has learned to lie from his boss! Are we surprised? NO!!,” wrote on X (formerly Twitter) user. Another added, “If MAGA sees it and says it’s not true, even after that, they should get a brain operation.”
Yet another user stated, “JDVance has a big mess to clean up…. Trump dumped over all the American people – he does care about their financial situation.” Moreover, one user called out the President, commenting, “Classic Gaslighting. By Trump and Vance.”
Notably, Donald Trump’s controversial comments about the financial well-being of US citizens have coincided with him receiving the worst-ever approval ratings on inflation. Meanwhile, JD Vance has yet to respond to the backlash following the CNN clip.
