Nick Lachey recently shared new details about unexpectedly seeing ex-wife, Jessica Simpson, for one of the first times in nearly 20 years.
Long before today’s reality TV couples, Nick and Jessica were one of the biggest celebrity pairings of the 2000s. Their MTV series Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica made them household names and gave fans a front-row seat to both their relationship and the issues that later played out publicly. After separating in 2005, the former couple finalized their divorce the next year.
Because their relationship was so heavily followed at the time, people have stayed interested in where things stand between them all these years later. That curiosity picked back up recently after reports claimed the former spouses unexpectedly crossed paths during a trip to Hawaii.
The former married couple had a run-in on a flight
Nick Lachey addressed the situation during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen after Andy asked whether the rumored reunion with Jessica really happened.
According to Nick, it did, and the experience turned out to be “strangely okay.”
“You know it’s been 20 years since … and so we haven’t seen each other in those 20 years and then spent six and a half hours on a flight to Hawaii together,” he said.
Nick later clarified that they were not actually sitting together during the trip. Still, he said everyone kept things respectful throughout the flight.
“Everyone was very very cordial, very respectful,” Nick explained. “It was honestly fine.”
The flight also included both families. Vanessa Lachey and the couple’s children were traveling with Nick, while Jessica sat with her mother and had other family members elsewhere on the plane.
Nick married Vanessa in 2011, while Jessica later married former NFL player Eric Johnson. Nick and Vanessa co-host Netflix’s Love Is Blind, while Nick also hosts Perfect Match. Jessica and Eric have been navigating a split.
Earlier reports about the flight painted a much more awkward picture. Sources claimed the former couple mostly avoided each other during the trip, with one report alleging Jessica even switched seats to stay farther away from Nick after they realized they were on the same flight.
Jessica has also spoken positively about Nick in recent years. In her 2020 memoir Open Book, she reflected on their relationship and said, “We meant a lot to each other and we always will.”
