On May 14, The Daily Show host Jordan Klepper seemed alarmed by Donald Trump’s demeanor following his Chinese summit.
While President Xi Jinping referred to sociopolitical theory the Thucydides Trap, Trump boasted about Chinese restaurants in America. As Xi talked about tensions between a world power and an emerging one, Trump was focused on fast food chains.
“Holy sh*t! What happened in there?” Jordan asked in amazement. “That’s my president! Putting his understanding of geopolitics into fast food terms. He gives a summit speech like a third grader who got assigned China for his geography project. ‘In conclusion, China is a land of contrast, and I brought Panda Express for everyone!’”

Although it was “good” to see Trump building bridges between China and the U.S., we still differ on some things. For one thing, China believes Taiwan is part of its territory, while the U.S. wants it to remain independent.
“I’m sure all the good will between Xi and Trump carried over into their closed-door meeting about Taiwan,” Jordan hoped. But apparently, he learned that Xi reportedly delivered a blunt threat to Trump regarding American intervention.
“Tough talk, President Xi!” Jordan added, in response to the Chinese leader’s reported remarks. “Perhaps you’ve forgotten that you’re talking to America, the country that’s just about to start kicking Iran’s ass any day now.”
“Now, I know Donald Trump’s not going to take a tongue-lashing like that,” the host continued. “Our president’s definitely not going to walk out of those talks looking like he’s in a hostage video.”
Of course, the next image we saw was of Trump facing reporters’ questions alongside Xi. Undeniably, he looked somewhat dazed, answering a query about how the meeting went with just one word: “Good.”
“Holy sh*t! What happened in there?” Jordan again demanded. “That was like asking Tiger Woods how the drive home went … He’s out there like, ‘Don’t you guys want to talk about anything else? Jeffrey Epstein? I got a lot of redactions. I got time!’”
