Colin Jost, known for Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update, nearly lost his signature hair on the show. A recent SNL sketch put his signature look at risk by introducing the possibility of him shaving his head on air.
Colin Jost almost shaved his hair on SNL
In a rare moment of live-TV jeopardy, Colin Jost nearly shaved his head during an SNL sketch.
Launched in 2018, Jost and Michael Che’s biannual Weekend Update joke swap pushes boundaries further with each installment. The segment requires each anchor to read jokes written by the other without seeing them first. The Weekend Update co-host may visibly dread it, but he keeps showing up for the joke swap with Che.
Last year, he had to deliver jokes about his wife, Scarlett Johansson, while she watched from backstage on camera. But for the Season 51 finale of Saturday Night Live, Che raised the stakes by putting Jost’s hair on the line.
Colin Jost issued an apology during the segment after reading a joke that asserted rapper Ye, formerly Kanye West, was “right about Hitler,” which the bit described as offending “everyone.”
“To apologize, I’d like to sacrifice the most important thing in my life: my beautiful, award-winning, world-famous… hair,” he added.
The comedian looked visibly unsettled as he went on. “That’s right, I’m shaving it off. Send in the barber!” he said.
On cue, a barber entered with a razor. Visibly shaken but resolved, Jost signaled he was ready, declaring, “Jerome, make me unpretty!”
Luckily, Michael Che felt sorry for him and intervened just as the razor moved toward Jost’s head. Che shouted for the barber to stop, then turned to Jost, who collapsed onto the table.
“You were really gonna do it?! Man, you are the greatest comedian of all time,” he said. Jost admitted he was scared with a relieved laugh.
However, his commitment continued. Later, during the season’s final goodnights, seemingly as a joke, Colin Jost was seen onstage, reportedly in a bald cap look that left fans stunned.
