Donald Trump’s Face Could Appear on a Proposed New $250 Bill

The Trump administration just made a bold move that could change U.S. currency forever. Treasury officials confirmed preparations for a proposed new bill that would break a long-standing tradition in American history.

The Treasury Department is preparing to print $250 bills featuring President Donald Trump’s face, NBC News reported. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed the plans during Thursday’s White House press briefing. He stated the department awaits Congressional approval before moving forward.

Bessent noted that the current law prohibits living persons from appearing on U.S. currency. However, proposed legislation on Capitol Hill seeks to change that restriction. “At Treasury we prepare things in advance, so we have prepared in advance that if the legislation is passed, but we will stick to the law,” Bessent said.

Rep. Joe Wilson, R-S.C., introduced the proposed legislation last year. The bill was referred to the House Financial Services Committee in February 2025. A GOP committee aide confirmed the bill received approval for a future committee hearing.

David Snider, Wilson’s spokesperson, said the congressman spoke with Bessent and Trump about the bill “on multiple occasions.” Bessent connected the proposal to the country’s upcoming 250th anniversary celebrations. He told reporters he does not find “anything untoward” about the effort.

A Treasury spokeswoman confirmed the Bureau of Engraving and Printing “is conducting appropriate planning and due diligence.” She added that the bureau “is moving proactively” to produce the bill if legislation passes. The bill must clear both the House and Senate before Trump can sign it.

This effort follows several other moves to place Trump’s likeness on currency. The Treasury announced in March that Trump’s signature would appear on paper currency. Additionally, a federal commission of Trump-appointed members approved his image for 24-karat commemorative gold coins. Both initiatives also cite the nation’s 250th anniversary as motivation. Trump has also affixed his name to federal buildings, discount drug programs, and proposed warships.
