Donald Trump reiterated his sharp criticism of Dr. Anthony Fauci after the former health official invoked the Fifth Amendment more than 100 times during a contentious Senate hearing. According to OK! Magazine, Fauci declined to answer nearly every question, citing his Fifth Amendment right on the advice of his legal counsel. His response came despite receiving a preemptive presidential pardon from former President Joe Biden in January 2025.

Trump, who himself invoked the Fifth Amendment more than 440 times during a 2022 civil deposition, also addressed Fauci’s decision.
“Well look, I’ve never been a big fan of Fauci. Why he did that was very simple. His lawyer told him to,” Trump said. “I don’t know if he would’ve been better off not doing it. There were a lot of questions I guess he could’ve answered, and some maybe he didn’t feel comfortable answering. But [his] lawyer told him to do that,” the president added.
Trump’s comments mark a notable contrast with his earlier praise of Fauci. Trump awarded Fauci a Presidential Commendation on January 19, 2021, for the doctor’s role on the Operation Warp Speed team. During his latest remarks, however, the president criticized Fauci’s pandemic management and his lockdown advice.
