Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s former UK home could soon look very different. New reports claim plans are being considered to undo millions of dollars’ worth of renovations made to Frogmore Cottage, the Windsor property once gifted to the couple by Queen Elizabeth II.
If the changes move forward, they would mark another symbolic chapter in the Sussexes’ long separation from royal life.
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s marital home faces ‘reversal’ of renovations worth $3 million, per report
Frogmore Cottage has been sitting empty since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle officially vacated the property in 2023. Now, according to a report from The Sun, officials are exploring ways to repurpose the residence, including the possibility of dividing it back into multiple homes.
The property wasn’t always the five-bedroom family retreat royal fans came to know. Before Harry and Meghan moved in, Frogmore Cottage reportedly consisted of separate residential units. Following their 2018 wedding, Queen Elizabeth gifted the property to the couple, triggering an extensive renovation project.
The overhaul reportedly cost about £2.4 million, or roughly $3 million. While the work was initially funded through the Sovereign Grant, Harry later repaid the full amount after he and Meghan stepped back as senior working royals in 2020.
The Sussexes moved into Frogmore shortly before the birth of Prince Archie in 2019 and continued using it during visits to the UK after relocating to California. The property also served as their base during Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations and the late monarch’s funeral in 2022.
According to The Sun, assessments are now underway to determine whether the home can be subdivided again. Construction has not reportedly begun, but sources told the outlet that significant work may be required to return the residence to its earlier layout.
One source claimed the goal would be to “return it to the pre-Meghan and Harry era.”
Over the years, reports suggested the couple customized the property with upgraded fixtures, designer interiors, and personal touches paid for privately. Buckingham Palace sources previously maintained that movable furnishings and decorative elements were covered by Harry and Meghan themselves.
Today, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are firmly settled in Montecito, California, with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
