Matt Damon is entering a new chapter of his career with “The Odyssey,” but his biggest focus these days isn’t Hollywood. The Oscar-winning actor recently reflected on fame and the challenge of staying present as his daughters grow up faster than he’d like.
After decades as one of the industry’s most reliable leading men, Damon says his priorities have shifted. While promoting Christopher Nolan’s upcoming epic, the “Good Will Hunting” star opened up about balancing a demanding career with family life and why time has become his most valuable currency.
Oscar-winner Matt Damon discusses staying present with his family while being hugely famous
Damon shares daughters Isabella, Gia, and Stella with his wife, Luciana Damon, and is also a stepfather to Alexia. Speaking with GQ, the actor admitted that watching his children grow up has changed the way he views success.
“Really trying to be here now,” Damon said when discussing what occupies his mind these days.
That’s easier said than done. The actor acknowledged that Hollywood’s uncertainty has trained him to constantly think about the next project, the next opportunity, and the next career move. Even after decades of success, he admitted that fear never fully disappears.
According to Damon, actors often carry a lingering worry that “the phone’s going to stop ringing,” no matter how established they become.
It’s a striking confession from someone whose career includes everything from “The Martian” and “Interstellar” to “Good Will Hunting,” the film that launched his stardom alongside Ben Affleck.
These days, however, he’s more selective. Damon told GQ that he intentionally stepped back from the nonstop pace of Hollywood to spend more time with his family and help build Artists Equity, the production company he co-founded with Affleck.
His daughters played a major role in that decision. “My youngest is a freshman, and I know how quickly these years go,” he explained.
That perspective has shaped how Damon approaches both work and parenting. In fact, he previously said fatherhood made him a better actor because the emotional experiences that once required imagination became part of everyday life.
