The Say Anything actor, John Cusack, revealed why he stepped away from Hollywood. He said that he wanted to tell stories creatively without interference from executives.
John Cusack opened up about the challenges that reshaped his relationship with Hollywood
John Cusack recently appeared in an interview with Variety, where he shared his reasons for stepping away from Hollywood. The actor spoke about his challenges and creative differences. He said, “I always thought [graphic novels] were the closest things to film, really. You’re picking out shots; they’re so cinematic.”
He also added that he made his career shift to writing as he did not want to compromise his storytelling. “When you ask somebody to put $20 million or $30 million into a bank account [for a film], they want to have an opinion, and they’re afraid and all that stuff,” he added.
The High Fidelity star has been working on “Momo,” his upcoming graphic novel with illustrator Ignacio Noé. He said, “This was just like, I wrote it, and I said, ‘I like the story,’ and then I got this beautiful, wonderful artist, Ignacio Noé, to do the illustrations, and so nobody edited anything I wrote or that he drew. So it’s really a piece of work that was just done by two people. It was just me and Ignacio’s story, and that doesn’t happen today.”
Earlier in the interview, he shared that “I feel so honored to have worked in this industry for a long time, but it’s also great to live your life and raise your kids and be in Chicago and be a normal person.”
He has been part of some of the popular films, including Say Anything (1989), High Fidelity (2000), Being John Malkovich (1999), and more. Now, he has distanced himself from Hollywood and has been working on a graphic novel.
“Momo” is scheduled for release on September 29, according to Page Six. Cusack said that his project allowed him to tell a story without outside creative interference.
