Marjorie Taylor Greene has publicly backed Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni over Donald Trump. The former Georgia congresswoman called Trump a liar after he claimed Meloni begged him for a photo at the G7 summit in France.
It all stems from a dispute over their interaction at the Group of Seven summit in Évian-les-Bains, where Trump alleged the Italian leader repeatedly asked him for a photo opportunity. Meloni flatly denied this, calling his account “completely fabricated” and saying she was “astounded” by his comments.
MTG sides with Giorgia Meloni amid Donald Trump’s G7 photo claim
MTG posted her support for Meloni on X (formerly Twitter), writing: “I believe @GiorgiaMeloni, she’s great!” She followed it with a blunt four-word verdict: “Trump lies. Constantly.”
Giorgia Meloni had already pushed back against Donald Trump’s version of events in a video, saying, “There is one thing he must remember: Neither I nor Italy ever beg.” She also questioned why the US president treats allies with less respect than adversaries. “I can only say it is regrettable that he does not show the same determination against the enemies of the West and the United States — against leaderships with whom he actually proves to be much more accommodating,” she said.
Trump, for his part, stood firm. He posted on Truth Social that Meloni had asked “over and over” for a photo with him. Also, he accused her of doing poorly in domestic polls because she had not supported US military efforts against Iran. The two leaders had previously clashed after Meloni raised concerns over an attack on an Iranian school and backed the Vatican’s criticism of the war.
MTG’s break with Trump is part of a broader pattern. Once one of his most vocal supporters, she has grown increasingly critical of the president over issues. These range from the Epstein files to his foreign policy positions. Last week, she challenged his claim that he never promised to avoid new wars. She cited videos of him making exactly that pledge on the campaign trail.
