The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington, D.C., has become the centre of major public controversy. This is due to a botched $14 million to $16 million renovation attempt. The incident led to a massive green algae bloom and peeling paint.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly asserted that the pool was vandalized. “Six people have been arrested, and seven people have been cited, for the damage they did to our Country’s now beautiful Reflecting Pool. The 350 foot gash, made by a very sharp knife or razors, is actually numerous slashes over a very long 350 foot length. It was purposefully and criminally done, and somebody had to work very hard, probably in the dark of night, to create such a condition,” he wrote on Truth Social on Tuesday.

Following this, on Wednesday, Trump posted a photo of the smooth surface of the pool before the alleged vandalization. He wrote, “This is the hard rubber surface — No Paint — Before the Vandals cut and pulled it apart!”

However, Government documents obtained by The New York Times indicate that workers were trying hard to stop the newly renovated pool from deteriorating, despite the Trump administration’s insistence that it was fine.

The controversial project, started by Trump, emerged ahead of the 250th anniversary celebrations. The renovations saw the draining of the water. It also included a paint job for the pool’s bottom, whose color the President dubbed “American flag blue.” However, since the renovation was completed, an algal bloom has affected the water, with the paint peeling off.
