Donald Trump Now Has a Road Named After Him but Not in the US

A road in Hyderabad, India, now bears the name of President Donald Trump. The Telangana government renamed the street adjoining the US Consulate. The renaming happened on June 23 at a gala event called Freedom 250, hosted to celebrate the 250th anniversary of American Independence.

The newly named Donald Trump Avenue runs alongside the US Consulate in Hyderabad and sits close to the offices of major American tech firms, including Microsoft, Google, and Amazon. The Telangana government described the designation as a tribute to the United States and a recognition of Hyderabad’s growing role in US-India relations.

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor and Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka jointly presided over the evening, which culminated in the unveiling of a ceremonial plaque bearing the road’s new name.

Ambassador Gor spoke of the city’s strategic significance during his remarks. “Nowhere is the high-speed trajectory of our partnership more evident than in Hyderabad. From HITEC City to aerospace and defense, this region represents progress that is defining our bilateral momentum,” he said.

He also tied the gesture to broader trade ambitions. “With our interim trade agreement and Mission India on track to bring over $20 billion of new investment to the United States, we are proving that America First does not mean America alone. We are deeply grateful to the Government of Telangana for the generous tribute of naming Donald Trump Avenue,” Gor added.

The renaming of the road after Donald Trump has not gone without controversy. Telangana is governed by the opposition Congress party, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) dismissed the move as “hypocrisy.”

Trump and Modi did, however, meet last week on the sidelines of the G7 summit in France, agreeing to accelerate a trade deal under negotiation. For now, a road in one of India’s tech hubs carries the name of an American president who has yet to set foot there.
