President Donald Trump just announced a bold new construction project, despite a federal judge’s warning. The president revealed renovation plans for a major landmark despite ongoing legal warnings and court restrictions.
Donald Trump announces DC golf course renovation
President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that work on the East Potomac Golf Course will begin on September 1, ABC News reports. He made the announcement despite a federal judge’s warning against proceeding without proper approvals. Trump visited the site alongside Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and golf course architect Tom Fazio.
The president described the current course as “dilapidated, worn out, and very dangerous and outdated.” He stated the renovation will proceed through a public-private partnership via the Department of the Interior. Trump also claimed the redesigned course will host major tournaments like the U.S. Open and PGA Championship.
A federal lawsuit filed by the nonprofit National Links Trust complicates the project’s timeline significantly. The administration terminated its agreement with the nonprofit in December over alleged maintenance failures. National Links Trust disputes those claims, and an agreement reached in May allows it to continue operations.
U.S. District Judge Ana Reyes issued a stern warning to the administration about unauthorized construction activity. She stated there would be “serious consequences” if work began without court notification and proper approvals. Lawyers for the D.C. Preservation League had warned the property could be razed before legal intervention.
Trump also toured other project sites during his Sunday motorcade across the capital. He visited the location of his proposed 250-foot triumphal arch near Arlington National Cemetery. The president additionally provided updates on the $16 million Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool overhaul.
Trump claimed without evidence that vandals caused algae blooms and damage to the Reflecting Pool. He wrote that the pool will be drained after July 4 for further treatment. Trump promised the finished golf course will feature “water and unparalleled views of D.C.’s Monuments.”
