Donald Trump Demands Gas Prices Fall to $2.50 a Gallon

President Donald Trump has ordered gas retailers to slash prices at once. The 80-year-old set a clear target of $2.50 a gallon nationwide. This comes amid the war in Iran, which is affecting the global economy.

Donald Trump warns companies to lower the gas price

The president issued the demand on his Truth Social platform on Monday, telling gasoline retailers to act as soon as possible or face consequences. “Gasoline Retailers must get their Prices down, IMMEDIATELY,” Trump wrote. “There will be no gauging [sic], which is totally illegal,” he added.

Donald Trump set a specific benchmark for gas companies to hit. “If Retailers don’t do this, big problems lie ahead! Start targeting around the $2.50 a Gallon number,” he posted, framing the figure as the line retailers should aim for nationwide.

POTUS framed compliance as a moral obligation rather than just a business decision, writing, “The Retailers must quickly react to this statement, and do what they know is right — DROP YOUR PRICE FOR OUR GREAT AMERICAN PEOPLE!”

California came in for criticism as Trump linked high pump prices there to state fuel taxes, arguing they had grown disproportionate to the cost of gasoline itself. “Soon the Tax will be higher than the Product itself, and the United States will not stand for it, nor will the People of California, who are being abused by these ridiculous Taxes, and by their own Government,” he wrote.

The remarks add to an ongoing rift between Trump and California Governor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat who has repeatedly opposed the administration’s energy policies. California, meanwhile, continues to invest in renewable power, with a goal of operating a fully carbon-neutral electrical grid within 20 years.

Gas prices have climbed since the US-Israel war on Iran began. In response, the administration has leaned on domestic oil supply, using emergency authority to bring back online a California pipeline that had sat idle since a large spill in 2015.
