Donald Trump’s Air Force One Swap Raises Security Questions About Qatar Jet

Donald Trump’s Air Force One switch just raised more questions than answers. The president explained his mid-trip plane swap and addressed growing security concerns about the Qatari-gifted jet.

President Donald Trump traveled from Turkey to the United Kingdom aboard the older Air Force One on Wednesday. He confirmed the plan at a press conference in Ankara before leaving the NATO summit, The Hill reported.

Trump revealed that the new $400 million Qatari-gifted aircraft would visit military bases across Europe instead. He specifically named Royal Air Force Mildenhall in the United Kingdom as the primary destination for the jet.

“To honor our brave men and women of the Military, we are sending the brand new, and truly spectacular, Air Force One to Mildenhall Air Force Base, in the United Kingdom, to give them a chance to tour the Aircraft,” Trump posted on Truth Social. He noted that military personnel “should be the first” to experience the plane.

The president also responded to questions about security risks during his remarks. He recognized his status as a primary target for Iran but dismissed any personal concern.

“I’m No. 1 on the kill list for Iran,” Trump stated in Ankara. “I don’t really care because I’m doing my job.” He lightheartedly added that he preferred being “No. 1 on TikTok.”

The Qatari-donated aircraft currently functions as a bridge plane between the aging Boeing 747-200s and two incoming Boeing jets. Those replacement aircraft were originally due in 2024 but will not be ready until 2028. The U.S. Air Force invested under $400 million in security modifications for the gifted plane.

The Associated Press previously reported that the new jet may lack some missile detection and countermeasure systems. An expert told the outlet the Qatari aircraft appeared more appropriate for domestic flights. It completed one trip to North Dakota last week before carrying Trump to Turkey.
