Britney Spears’ recent freeway incident prompted an unexpected response from someone closely tied to her life. Her former manager, Sam Lutfi, urged the public to show compassion instead of rushing to judgment after the viral moment.
The pop star made headlines after she was photographed standing through the moonroof of a moving Mercedes SUV on Los Angeles’ 101 Freeway. The incident came just months after her March DUI arrest, which ended with Spears pleading guilty to a reduced reckless driving charge.
Sam Lutfi wants “grace” and compassion for Britney amid her troubles
According to the Daily Mail, Lutfi said Spears deserved empathy rather than criticism as public scrutiny intensified once again. “She’s already spent her life under a microscope, so why don’t we show her the same grace we’d want for ourselves, period?” he said. “I wish her nothing but the best.”
The outlet reported that Lutfi also cautioned against making assumptions about the singer’s well-being. He described Spears as “a human being before she’s a celebrity” and added that people were often “very quick to judge, especially when it’s Britney.” He also stressed that “social media isn’t someone’s medical chart” and said he had no interest in trying “to diagnose [or] criticize” her.
Spears later addressed the viral photos herself. She wrote on Instagram, “What people see is two seconds of insanity of me arching me to the lords !!!!! yet the days and hours of my reality!!!!!!” before joking, “Nothing is what it seems. Psss I think I need to come out of the roof quite a bit more.”
The publication also cited a source close to Spears, who insisted there was no cause for alarm. According to the insider, the singer simply wanted to see what was causing traffic and had done similar things while growing up. The source added that Spears “is having a fun summer and is happy,” explaining that she never intended to do anything wrong.
Lutfi’s comments carried added weight because of his complicated history with Spears. He managed the singer during 2007 and 2008 before years of legal disputes followed, including restraining orders obtained by Spears and her family.
Despite that history, Lutfi has continued speaking positively about her. As the Daily Mail noted, he said during a 2025 Popcorned Planet podcast appearance that Spears was “a fantastic friend, and a great client.”
