Chuck Grassley Seeks Records on Kash Patel’s FBI Travel and Spending

Chuck Grassley is seeking more information about FBI Director Kash Patel‘s travel expenses and agency spending, requesting records related to government flights and vehicle purchases.

Grassley’s latest move comes as scrutiny over Patel’s use of taxpayer resources continues to grow. The Senate Judiciary chairman said the records are necessary to determine whether taxpayer funds have been used appropriately.

Grassley sent Patel a letter requesting a full accounting of his taxpayer-funded travel aboard FBI aircraft. Among the questions, the Iowa senator asked for a list of every government flight Patel has taken, the cost of each trip, and whether the travel was official or personal.

“For each trip where you used an FBI aircraft for personal travel, have you reimbursed the FBI as required by law? If yes, please provide the records,” Grassley wrote.

The senator also requested an “independent and objective review” of Patel’s travel expenses while questioning why the FBI purchased luxury BMW SUVs instead of the Chevrolet Suburbans traditionally used by the agency.

An FBI spokesperson previously defended the decision, saying government agencies “routinely evaluate, replace and update vehicle fleets based on usage, security needs or budgetary decisions.”

Grassley’s inquiry has received support from Democratic lawmakers, including Rep. Jamie Raskin and Sen. Dick Durbin, who have raised similar concerns about Patel’s spending. In a separate letter, the pair alleged Patel sought unnecessary perks during official travel, including a taxpayer-funded helicopter tour in East Asia and recreational activities during work trips.

The lawmakers also cited an anonymous source who claimed Patel once told FBI staff, “If you have golf, hockey, fishing or hunting and beautiful sights, you’re going to see a lot of me.”

Despite the criticism, the FBI has defended Patel’s travel practices, stating on X, “This FBI is more efficient and effective in every way,” while arguing that his personal travel costs have been lower than those of former directors Christopher Wray and James Comey.

Grassley also referenced Patel’s own criticism of Wray before becoming FBI director. During a 2024 appearance on Glenn Beck’s podcast, Patel said, “Chris Wray doesn’t need a government-funded G-5 jet to go on vacation. Maybe we ground that plane, $15,000 every time it takes off.”

Closing his letter, Grassley emphasized his long-standing position on government accountability, writing, “For decades, regardless of which political party is in the White House, I have worked to ensure that taxpayers’ dollars are protected from waste, fraud, and abuse.”
