Writer Joseph Gerth has written a pre-obituary for Republican Senator Mitch McConnell. Following his fall, McConnell has been in the hospital and is currently recovering.
A hometown columnist tore into Mitch McConnell’s political legacy in an unusual tribute
Gerth’s opinion column, published in the Louisville Courier Journal, paints a less-than-perfect image of the Senator. The writer starts with the reason he is writing now, just as McConnell seems to be in recovery. He wrote that the reason for the timing is so that no one can question, “How dare you write that about a dead guy?”
According to RadarOnline, Gerth’s analysis led to calling McConnell a “despicable human being.” He accused the Senator of many offences, including the “hypocritical manipulation of the U.S. Supreme Court confirmation process.”
According to Gerth, McConnell supported the conservative turn taken by the Supreme Court. Reportedly, he was also in favour of a far-right takeover of the executive branch. The writer also heavily criticized McConnell’s support for Donald Trump.
McConnell had earlier spoken out against Trump after the January 6 invasion of the Capitol. However, he began to endorse Trump after that. Gerth puts it as, “Even when Trump said racist things about McConnell’s wife, former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, McConnell continued to bend his knee.”
Following the sudden death of Senator Lindsay Graham, critics had gone into an awkward zone. While many attacked the Republican leaders, others were not too sure about criticizing a dead person. Gerth, however, confirmed that the staff writers write about dead people with “warts and all”
The writer, however, remarked on the good parts of McConnell’s reign. He said that his policies have helped many Americans, especially Kentuckians. His advocacy for free speech, including the burning of the American flag, was a bright spot.
“But none of that will matter,” Gerth wrote, saying that these good deeds do not stand a chance for how negatively he has impacted America’s future.
McConnell is recovering and aims to continue with his term. However, he is not running for re-election in November.
