Nathan Fillion’s ‘The Rookie’ Badge Gets Him Out of Trouble — Sort Of

Nathan Fillion said a police officer once confused him with Jason Bateman during a traffic stop. The Rookie star, who plays a police officer on the show, recalled being pulled over by a real officer who appeared to recognise him and asked for an autograph, only to realise he had confused him with Bateman.

Nathan Fillion’s cop fame helped after a traffic stop, but there was a mistaken identity twist

Speaking at San Diego Comic-Con on July 27, the 55-year-old Fillion recalled, “I got pulled over once, and the officer looked at my ID and said, ‘I recognize you’re an actor.'” To which, he replied, “Yes… actually, I’m pretty good,” reports People.

Fillion continued the story, saying the officer offered to let him off with a warning if he signed an autograph for his wife. The actor agreed and began writing the message after asking for her name. Before he could sign it, he overheard the officer telling his wife on the phone that he had stopped Bateman. The actor joked that he signed the autograph as “Jason Bateman,” earning big laughs from the audience.

On ABC’s hit drama, which started in 2018 and was created by Alexi Hawley, Fillion portrays John Nolan, the oldest rookie officer in the fictional LAPD. Besides Fillion, the show stars Melissa O’Neil, Eric Winter, Alyssa Diaz, Richard T. Jones, Mekia Cox, Shawn Ashmore, Jenna Dewan, Lisseth Chavez, and Deric Augustine. Bridget Regan will not be returning to the show after her character, Monica, was killed off in the April 27 episode.

Season 9 of The Rookie is already in production and is expected to premiere in January 2027. Speaking to Deadline at San Diego Comic-Con, creator Alexi Hawley teased that the premiere will be a two-part episode with “incredibly high stakes,” adding, “It’s a love story, it’s funny and unexpected.”
