Why Carl Radke ‘Was in a Bad Place and Really Struggling’

It’s a big week for Carl Radke, who has just reached five years of sobriety. But the moment is about more than celebration for the Summer House star. In a new interview, he’s also reflected on being “in a bad place and really struggling” before turning his life around.

The Summer House star is celebrating five years of sobriety

Chatting to People from his non-alcoholic Soft Bar in Brooklyn, Carl opened up about his alcohol and cocaine addiction, which Summer House viewers saw play out in earlier seasons. He eventually got sober in January 2021 and spoke to People about his journey since then, as well as the “really dark, rock bottom day” that changed everything.

“The last few years of my drinking and partying, I was in a bad place and really struggling,” he said, before recalling a pivotal moment in his decision to get sober.

Carl explained that his brother’s tragic death in September 2020 “was a huge catalyst to take a look in the mirror.” However, it still took him some time to transform his life. “It didn’t happen overnight, and I didn’t immediately get sober.”

Eventually, Carl admitted to himself that he had a “problem.” From there, he found “the right support and people to connect with,” which enabled him to make the much-needed change.

As for how he maintains his sobriety while partying in the Hamptons over summer? Carl credits his supportive co-stars for that. “It is important to have your friends and the people around you understand what your motivations are,” he explained. “They respect that, and then they look out for me.”

Ultimately, Carl said getting sober “completely” changed his life – and it’s a feat he’s rightfully very proud of. “I can’t even realize how much progress I’ve made,” he went on. “It’s sometimes crazy to look back.”

So, as it turns out, Carl’s not a mess after all!
