Seth Meyers had a field day roasting Donald Trump over a remark the president made during a recent rally. The president appeared to mix up different eras when he said there were no planes during his father’s time.
Seth Meyers joked Donald Trump confused the 1990s with the 1800s during his latest remarks
The talk show host and frequent Trump critic Seth Meyers mocked the president’s remarks. POTUS made these comments during a rally that was meant to address auto workers in Michigan. Trump boasted about his father, saying, “he didn’t want planes — they didn’t have planes in those days. I don’t think.”
Playing the clip, Meyers launched into a monologue on Late Night. Meyers said, “Yeah, they didn’t have planes back then. You have to remember, this was in the 1800s, when Trump’s father was born.”
Meyers joked, “And wait, what the f–k am I talking about? Trump’s father died in 1999! I’m pretty sure they invented planes before season three of ‘Sex and the City.'”
Trump’s father was born in 1905, after the Wright Brothers’ first successful powered flight in 1903. The first jet aircraft flew in 1939, and the first commercial jet airliner entered service in 1952. By the time Fred Trump became a businessman, aviation had already become well established.
This is not the first time Trump has made historical remarks that drew attention. During a previous speech, he referred to airports while discussing the Revolutionary War. His exact words were, “[The army] took over the airports. It did everything it had to do.” Continuing the satire, Meyers said, “Yeah, we all remember the famous Battle of LaGuardia, where Washington and his men crossed from Terminal A to Terminal B and surprised the British army that was camped out at the Shake Shack.”
Meyers also joked about Trump’s timeline, saying it suggested airports existed in the 1700s while planes did not exist in 1999.
Verbal slips have drawn attention before as well. During the recently concluded NATO Summit, Trump referred to Iran as “The Republic of Japan” and mistakenly addressed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as “President Putin.”
