CNN data analyst Harry Enten highlighted a dramatic decline in Donald Trump’s approval among younger Americans, based on CNN polling covered by The Daily Beast. Enten broke down the numbers during his Thursday segment on the network. In the 2024 presidential race, Kamala Harris maintained just a three-point advantage over Trump with under-50 voters. That gap has now exploded to 41 points, marking a staggering 38-point swing against the president.
“We are talking about an absolutely huge shift. A 180. Young voters are fed up, and they’re taking their anger out on President Trump,” Enten stated. He further noted that Trump’s numbers are “falling through the floor.”
The president, now 80, faces growing frustration over a Middle East conflict and rising living costs. Older voters have also moved away from Trump, but at a slower pace. Enten pointed out the shift among over-50 voters is “less than half that” and sits “under a 15-point shift.”
Congressional Republicans are feeling the effects of this backlash as well. Democrats led under-50 voters by four points in the fall 2024 House ballot. That advantage has since jumped to 17 points, growing more than fourfold.
“The reason why Democrats have been able to jump out to this lead in Congress, the reason why they are likely to take back the U.S. House of Representatives, is not older voters,” Enten explained. He described the trend as “a titanic type of shift away from the Republican Party.”
Enten credited the president’s low standing to younger voters turning sharply against him. “Your Gen Z, your millennials, they gave President Trump a little bit of a try in 2024. No longer,” he remarked. White House spokesperson Davis Ingle pushed back by referencing Trump’s 2024 election win. He praised Trump as “the unequivocal leader, best motivator, and unmatched messenger for the Republican Party.”
