Michelle Hadley has asked a judge to consider the impact she says Ian Diaz had on her life before his sentencing appeal moves forward. A new report says she wrote an emotional letter describing years of trauma and fear. Hadley also asked the court not to shorten Diaz’s prison term. The case gained renewed attention after Netflix featured it in A Toxic Love Story.

According to TMZ, Hadley submitted a letter for the judge to review before deciding matters related to Diaz’s sentence. It reported that Diaz is trying to overturn his conviction by arguing that his former lawyer did not represent him effectively during trial. Hadley had asked the court to uphold his prison term, the outlet said. She wrote, “I was a captive of Mr. Diaz long before I ever ended up in a jail cell.”
Prosecutors charged Ian Diaz and his former wife, Angela Diaz, with conspiring to target Hadley. Court records cited by the outlet say they allegedly posted Craigslist ads with Hadley’s address that asked men to act out a “rape fantasy.” Later, Hadley became the victim of a false arrest and was jailed for approximately three months before being released. Ian Diaz was later sentenced to 10 years in prison, and Angela Diaz served time as well and has now completed her sentence.
In her letter, Hadley told the court that she met Diaz as “a confident, happy and optimistic young woman who saw her whole life ahead of her.” She wrote that her relationship with “a man so dark, twisted and malicious” changed her life forever. Hadley also wrote, “Your Honor, I didn’t have shadows in my eyes before Ian Diaz, but I certainly did after what he put me through.” She added, “I think it’s important for the court to understand the impact that Mr. Diaz has had on my life.”
After both sides file their claims, a judge will determine whether his case will proceed. The latest letter adds Hadley’s account to the court record as the legal battle continues.
