Why Natalie Portman Thinks U.S. Pregnancy Care Feels Like a Business

Natalie Portman shared her thoughts on how she finds the maternal care provided in the U.S. different from that in France. The Oscar winner, who is expecting her third child, revealed in an interview with ELLE that the biggest difference she felt during her pregnancy care was a socialized versus non-socialized approach to medicine.

Natalie Portman explained how U.S. and French medical care differ during pregnancy

In an interview with ELLE, Portman said both countries offered excellent pregnancy care, but she believes the biggest difference lies in how each healthcare system operates.

She explained that in the French healthcare system, doctors provide the necessary care without adding extra costs. But in the U.S., patients are often offered additional services if they are willing to pay. She concluded, “You can see that it is also a business.”

Portman experienced her first pregnancy while living in the U.S. and her second while living in France, giving her firsthand experience with both healthcare systems. She now lives in Paris with her children and partner, Tanguy Destable.

In the interview with ELLE, Portman also shared her wellness routine during pregnancy. She explained that she tries to stay active every day by swimming, walking, or doing Gyrotonic exercises.

Portman follows a vegan diet, takes vitamins, and prioritizes her sleep. She said, “I also feel like being pregnant is almost like a cleanse because you don’t drink and can’t have caffeine. So I’m like, Wow, I’ve never been cleaner in my life.”

The face of the Miss Dior fragrance, Portman recently posted a photo of her baby bump on Instagram, describing her thoughts in the caption: “Counting the days until we meet you,” crediting her photographer Shelby Duncan.
