Governor Andy Beshear has abandoned his push to force a special election for Mitch McConnell’s seat. Instead, he gave a warning about the senator’s prolonged disappearance from public life and Donald Trump’s crucial votes in Congress.

Beshear admitted on Monday that the August 3 deadline to call a special election had “no legal impact” on his options. Kentucky law never gave him the power to push McConnell out. Section 152 of the state Constitution requires a senator to resign at least three months before an election to trigger a special contest. House Bill 622 further removed the governor’s ability to appoint temporary replacements for vacant Senate seats. That law remains legally untested.
However, Andy Beshear shifted his strategy as he now warns that Mitch McConnell’s disappearance alone punishes Republicans. “Worth a reminder, right now, there’s one less vote for the SAVE Act, Trump’s war with Iran, or the potential replacement of a SCOTUS justice,” Beshear wrote on X.
McConnell has stayed out of public view for 50 days. He suffered a concussion and a broken rib in March 2023 after a fall. Later that year, he froze twice while addressing reporters. His office has shared few details about his current condition.
Furthermore, Republicans attacked Beshear over the weekend for skipping Kentucky’s annual Fancy Farm picnic. The governor rejected their criticism and pointed to their silence on McConnell. “Funny how the Republicans are all mad I missed one political event to watch my son play baseball. But no outrage that Mitch McConnell has been nowhere to be seen for 50 days,” he wrote on X.
All in all, the Kentucky governor wants Republicans to answer for their lack of transparency about the senator’s health. The razor-thin Republican majority in the Senate means every absence carries weight. One missing vote can stall Trump’s legislative priorities or judicial confirmations.
