George R.R. Martin has returned to his personal blog after several months away with a candid update about his emotional health and growing older. The author said the past year brought major highs alongside difficult personal losses. The Game of Thrones creator also acknowledged feeling overwhelmed by work, deadlines, and grief. However, his message did not include a new release date for The Winds of Winter.
George R.R. Martin says he has battled depression while reflecting on aging
Martin published a new entry titled “Better Late Than Never” on his Not a Blog website Aug. 3. He noted that his last personal post appeared Feb. 19 and explained that assistants had handled the updates published afterward.
“This year has been … stressful, to say the least,” Martin wrote. He said he had lost friends and “battled sadness and depression” while managing an overwhelming number of events and responsibilities.
Martin also reflected on turning 77 last September. “Getting old is no fun,” he wrote, while adding that the year had still included “amazing times.” He did not disclose a diagnosis, treatment plan or further details about his mental health.
The author later shifted to positive news. He celebrated the nine 2026 Emmy nominations received by HBO’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, including recognition in the drama series category. Martin also said he hoped to attend the awards ceremony.
The new post did not provide a direct update on The Winds of Winter. Martin previously called the delayed novel “the curse of my life” and said he continued working on it despite repeated interruptions.
More recently, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms showrunner Ira Parker revealed that Martin had returned to writing Dunk and Egg stories. The news disappointed some readers waiting for progress on the next mainline A Song of Ice and Fire novel. Martin has remained involved with several projects tied to HBO’s Westeros franchise. He previously praised A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms as a faithful adaptation and expressed enthusiasm for its cast and creative team.
The Hollywood Reporter highlighted Martin’s return after months of limited personal communication. His blog entry focused less on deadlines than on grief, aging and the pressure of balancing several creative commitments. Martin ended on a cautiously optimistic note, saying he planned to catch up through shorter posts with help from his staff.
