Ariana Madix isn’t giving up on the idea of more queer representation on Love Island USA. The longtime host recently addressed claims that same-sex pairings would not work within the show’s current format. Rather than dismissing the idea, Madix said she’s confident the logistics could be worked out if producers decided to make the change.
Ariana feels queer representation deserves a place on Love Island
Speaking to Marie Claire, Madix pushed back against the argument that queer relationships would be too complicated for the dating show’s structure. “We’ll figure out the logistics,” she said. “When there’s a recoupling, they tell the powers that be. They’re not coming up with it in the moment.”
The Peacock host acknowledged the format would require adjustments. Still, she believes the series could evolve while keeping its core concept intact. “Making this show is always laying one piece of train track in front of the other as the train is approaching,” Madix added. “So we would figure it out.” She admitted her outlook may be “optimistic or maybe delulu,” but maintained that greater queer representation is “certainly” possible.
The topic isn’t entirely new for Love Island USA. Previous seasons have featured contestants who identified as bisexual, along with a handful of same-sex couplings. However, the series has yet to embrace queer relationships as part of its main format fully.
Elsewhere in the interview, Madix also addressed the growing wave of online criticism directed at Islanders during each season. She said hateful comments have no place in the show’s fan community. “I don’t think that hate has any place in our viewership whatsoever,” she said. Madix also praised the show’s decision to better protect contestants’ social media accounts during Season 8, calling it a positive step.
She also encouraged viewers to remember that every contestant approaches dating differently. While respectful discussion is part of the viewing experience, she said harassment and personal attacks should never be.
The interview comes just weeks after Madix earned her first Emmy nomination for Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality Competition Program. That marks another milestone in her successful run as the face of Love Island USA.
