Jane Fonda, the two-time Oscar-winning actress, is stepping into California’s heated housing debate. The 88-year-old actress and activist has teamed up with philanthropist and Google founder’s wife Wendy Schmidt to launch a campaign urging voters to reject Proposition 45.
Prop. 45 is a ballot initiative that is designed to change the approval process for housing and infrastructure projects in California. However, Fonda stands against it.
Jane Fonda and Wendy Schmidt launched a campaign opposing California’s housing reform measure
According to the New York Post, Fonda and Schmidt are backing a campaign called “No on 45”. They argue that the proposal would weaken long-standing environmental protections in California. The initiative comes as Proposition 45 has emerged as one of the state’s most closely watched ballot measures ahead of the November election this year.
In a statement shared as part of the campaign, Jane Fonda warned against the measure, saying, “It (Prop. 45) claims to solve the housing crisis, but instead it guts California’s most important environmental law and gives developers a free pass to build without accountability.”
Earlier in an old photo with Schmidt on her official Instagram, Fonda wrote, “We are putting our heads together! Inspired and working hard to protect all Californians, because clean air, free of deadly pollutants, is a human right.”
Despite the opposition campaign, Proposition 45 has garnered rare bipartisan support amid growing frustration over California’s lengthy approval process. According to the Public Policy Institute of California, 73% of voters support the measure, including 80% of Democrats and 61% of Republicans.
The campaign marks Fonda’s latest involvement in environmental activism, an issue she has championed for years. With the actress now joining the opposition effort alongside Schmidt, the debate surrounding Proposition 45 is expected to draw even more national attention as Californians prepare to vote on the measure later this year.
