Princess Diana’s Close Friend Says She Would Have Seen Meghan Markle Differently

Princess Diana may never have met Meghan Markle, but one of her closest confidants believes the late royal would have welcomed her with open arms. His latest comments paint a far warmer picture than many royal watchers have imagined over the years.

Richard Kay shared his thoughts while answering viewers’ questions on Palace Confidential.

Richard Kay said he believes Princess Diana would have admired Meghan Markle and welcomed her into the family

Princess Diana remains one of the most talked-about members of the royal family, even nearly three decades after her death. Naturally, many fans still wonder how she would have reacted to Prince Harry marrying Meghan Markle.

Richard Kay became close friends with Diana during the last five or six years of her life. He rejected one viewer’s suggestion that the late princess would have quickly dismissed Meghan. The veteran royal correspondent said, “None of us really know. But I think there is something about Meghan that Diana would have found not just intriguing but slightly liberating,” he explained on Palace Confidential last year.

Kay also believed Diana would have admired Meghan’s confidence and independence. “I think she would have liked Meghan’s independence and the fact that she was able to offer Harry an escape route, if you like, from royal duty,” he added.

However, Richard said Princess Diana would have struggled with the ongoing tension between Prince Harry and Prince William. He explained, “I think she would have admired Harry’s decision to settle in America. She wouldn’t have admired, however, the rift with William. I think she would have been very disappointed by how things panned out, but I think initially she would have been very welcoming to [Meghan]. That’s my view.”

Kay’s comments also revealed another surprising detail about Diana’s life. He said she seriously considered moving to the United States before her death. This was because she believed America offered celebrities greater freedom.

“She talked about it right at the very end of her life to me, about settling for a time in the U.S. She loved the U.S. I think that if she could, she would have moved there and lived there,” Richard recalled.

Still, Diana never acted on those plans because Prince William and Prince Harry were only 15 and 12 years old. She wanted to remain close to her sons while they grew up.

Richard also remembered Princess Diana as “amusing” with “a wry sense of humour,” adding that the public rarely saw that side of her. He described her as both “remarkable” and his “very good friend,” recalling dinners, movie nights, scenic drives along the Norfolk coast, and the heartbreaking fact that he received the final phone call she made before her death in Paris.
