Vice President J.D. Vance is facing criticism online after referring to his newborn son, Alec Neel Vance‘s “first full day alive” during a recent interview with Fox News host Laura Ingraham. Several social media users argued that the remark appeared to contradict his long-held anti-abortion views.
J.D. Vance’s description of newborn son Alec caught critics’ attention for an unexpected reason
During the interview, Vance recalled how President Donald Trump encouraged him to take time off after the birth of his fourth child, Alec. “The president called me the first full day Alec was alive, the day he was born, and he says, ‘You should take some time off,'” Vance said. He added that he reminded Trump about a meeting they had scheduled for the following day, but the president insisted otherwise.
“‘Yeah. Take some time off. Like today,'” Vance recalled Trump saying before laughing.
Later in the interview, Usha Vance and baby Alec briefly joined him on set. Ingraham noted that the newborn had smiled for the first time earlier that morning. Alec is the fourth child of J.D. and Usha and the first baby born to a sitting U.S. vice president in more than 150 years.
Soon after the clip surfaced online, social media users reacted to Vance’s choice of words. While some joked that Trump appeared eager to send the vice president home, others focused on his description of Alec’s “first full day alive.”
The clip also sparked several reactions on X. One user wrote, “…the first full day Alec was alive. So, he doesn’t believe that life begins at conception. Good to know.” Another commented, “His contrived stories to make him seem relatable are hard to watch.”
Many argued that Vance’s wording conflicted with his anti-abortion views. During his 2022 Senate campaign, Vance maintained that unborn life begins before birth and supported making abortion illegal nationwide based on that belief.
